Free G702 Generator: Create an AIA-Style Application for Payment
A G702-style Application and Certificate for Payment is the cover sheet of every progress billing package in commercial construction. It summarizes the contract sum, approved change orders, total work completed and stored, retainage, previous payments, and — the number everyone cares about — the current payment due. PayAppFlow generates it for you, with every line computed automatically from your schedule of values.

The nine numbered lines on a G702 are all arithmetic — and all connected. Line 3 (contract sum to date) must equal Line 1 plus Line 2. Line 4 must match the Column G total on your G703 continuation sheet exactly. Line 5 retainage must be computed at the contract rate on completed work and stored materials separately. Line 7 must equal Line 6 from your previous certificate. A single mismatch and the GC's reviewer sends the whole package back.
| Line | What it is | Where errors happen |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Original contract sum | Not updated after descope letters |
| 2 | Net change by change orders | Missing or double-counted COs |
| 3 | Contract sum to date | Doesn't equal 1 + 2 |
| 4 | Total completed & stored | Doesn't match G703 Column G |
| 5 | Retainage | Wrong split of completed vs stored rates |
| 6 | Total earned less retainage | Rounding drift |
| 7 | Previous certificates | Doesn't equal last month's Line 6 |
| 8 | Current payment due | All of the above flow into it |
| 9 | Balance to finish | Doesn't equal 3 − 6 |
Why free templates keep failing
Excel templates and one-off PDF generators can format a G702 — but they can't remember last month. The two most common rejection reasons are continuity errors: Line 7 not matching the prior application's Line 6, and Column D on the continuation sheet not matching the sum of everything previously billed. PayAppFlow stores each billing period, so those values carry forward automatically and always reconcile.
Is an AIA-style form acceptable?
In most cases, yes. Many GCs and owners accept "AIA-style" pay application formats that present the same fields in the same layout. If your contract explicitly requires official AIA Contract Documents, purchase the official form from AIA — you can still use PayAppFlow to compute every value error-free and transfer them. See our guide on how to fill out a G702, the companion G703 continuation sheet, and the retainage calculator.
